Bechtel Project Recognized by Power Engineering
“This project is an example of teamwork at its best,” said Alasdair Cathcart, President of Bechtel’s power business unit. “It required collaboration at every level among a broad range of groups, including the employees, local trade unions, suppliers, state agencies, and local utilities. Everyone’s efforts resulted in a world-class product.”
Bechtel, in conjunction with Babcock & Wilcox and Stantec Consulting Services, retrofitted the air quality system at the W.H. Sammis power plant in Stratton, Ohio. Key suppliers instrumental to the project’s success included Dynasteel Corporation, PSP Industries, Prospect Steel, Howden Variax Incorporated, Pullman Power Company, and Dearborn Midwest Conveying Company.
“To be picked as a finalist out of a total of 16 entrants is a feat in and of itself,” said Sharryn Dotson, chairperson for the Power Engineering Projects of the Year awards. “What made the Sammis project stand out as one of three finalists was the amount of emissions expected to be cut with the installation of the new emissions control equipment and the limited space available to install the systems and related equipment.”
The Projects of the Year awards, given annually by Power Engineering magazine, recognize facilities and technologies considered breakthrough solutions in the power industry. The 2010 awards were presented at the Power Gen Conference in Orlando, Florida, on December 14.
Earlier in the month, the Sammis project was named Project of the Year by Platts Global Construction
