The Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, recently brought on line a new, more energy efficient steam plant that replaced one that had been in operation since the 1950s.
With its footprint much smaller than that of the old plant, the new steam plant is expected to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases as well as toxic substances-- some by up to 99 percent.
Reliable and cost-effective steam generation is vital to the operation of Y-12 because the complex relies on steam as its primary source of building heat while providing freeze protection for critical services, including fire protection systems. Also, steam is necessary to support Y-12's mission and to provide steam-condensate and treated water.

Y-12 is managed and operated by B&W Technical Services Y-12, LLC, a partnership between Bechtel National and Babcock & Wilcox.
