Small plastics, big impact

Colleagues working on delivering the Morava motorway project in Serbia are not only connecting communities with the country's first 5G-ready motorway, but they are also partnering with a local charity to improve the lives of disabled people while tackling plastic pollution.

Last month, Bechtel ENKA UK Limited (BEJV) joined other companies from across Serbia in an initiative to collect plastic bottle caps which are sold to be recycled and help fund projects through the "Čep za hendikep" association.

The association buys new or used orthopedic aids using the money it receives for collecting the bottle caps. In the last five years, the association recycled about 120 tons of bottle caps per year.  This volume generates approximately US$36,000 per year, as the caps are sold at around 30 cents per kilogram, which has enabled Čep za hendikep to help close to 100 individuals in need.

The challenge to collect the bottle caps has been received so enthusiastically by the Morava project team that our colleagues are now looking to broaden the collecting scope in the coming months to include plastics, paper, and glass waste to increase overall recycling efforts in the BEJV Camp.
