Enabling the energy transition

Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is a crucial part of the advancement of energy systems globally on the path to a low-carbon world.

For more than 20 years, Bechtel has supported customers in the US, UK and mainland Europe in developing carbon capture solutions for the energy generation sector. To date, we have built more than 40 amine-based CO2/H2S removal systems for LNG plants, gas processing plants, and refineries. We also contributed to the National Petroleum Council’s study: Meeting the Dual Challenge: A Roadmap to At-Scale Deployment of Carbon Capture, Use and Storage.

Continuous innovation

Innovation and continuous refining of carbon capture facilities is necessary to improve efficiencies, reduce cost and accelerate deployment. We help our customers reduce the power requirements in capturing carbon. In addition we continue to work with the University of Sheffield, other top research universities and the US Department of Energy to develop our understanding and identify improvements approaches for carbon capture. We were previously selected by the World Bank to assess six proprietary carbon capture licensors.

Best-fit solutions

We deliver best-fit solutions for customers by combining our deep knowledge of flue gases with a technology-agnostic approach.

We leverage our knowledge and skills to develop scalable, economical solutions to the carbon challenge, including a generic amine offering that has been optimized for energy balance and minimises ongoing operational costs.

Carbon capture facilities can be retrofitted to existing plants and incorporated as part of new greenfield projects. Where emitters do not have an adjacent pipeline solution, we can help develop schemes to liquify CO2, provide onshore buffer storage and transport via rail or ship to hubs that have the infrastructure for CO2 sequestration.

How we can help

  • Bioenergy

Bechtel is supporting our customers in bioenergy projects, which combine biomass feedstocks with carbon capture and sequestration to produce clean energy.

  • lighted cables

    Technology and innovation

Our Bechtel Energy Technologies & Solutions team collaborates with customers to assess, select, and pilot the best traditional technologies and develop new solutions.

  • Onshore and offshore transportation

Bechtel has more than 120 years of offshore and onshore pipeline experience and extensive gas-gathering expertise. We work with our customers to engage the community and ensure a broad understanding of project benefits, community impact, construction processes, and schedules.

  • Financial assessments

Understanding evolving carbon taxation and its impact on project financing decisions can be challenging. Bechtel provides the technology options, execution experience, and highest impact decarbonization solutions to provide a complete assessment of the financing required to pursue lower carbon emissions.

  • Compression and storage

Our retrofit experts analyze energy efficiency to determine the potential upgrades needed to improve carbon capture. In some cases, CO2 can be safely stored in geological sites.
