Bechtel’s construction team successfully completed the precision installation of a massive 50-ton (45-metric-ton) shield door at the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) site in Hanford, Washington. The shield door is in a key area of WTP’s High-Level Waste Vitrification Facility and was installed to extremely tight tolerances, down to five-thousandths of an inch (0.13 millimeters), or less than the diameter of a human hair. The new door is one of six that Bechtel will install at WTP.

Bechtel National is designing and building WTP, the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant, for the U.S. Department of Energy. Construction began in 2001 and is now more than 50 percent complete. The plant will begin operating in 2019. For more information about WTP, visit its Web site or the Hanford Vitrification Plant project page.
