For the second time in four years, Bechtel and its joint-venture partner ENKA have won an International Road Federation (IRF) Global Road Achievement Award for their environmental mitigation work on the Kosovo motorway project. The IRF awards recognize best practices from leading road and highway projects around the world.
“This project was an exceptional showcase of environmental stewardship to meet project goals and national objectives,” said C. Patrick Sankey, President & CEO, IRF. “Since 2000, IRF has recognized outstanding projects from around the world, and we are delighted to name the Bechtel-ENKA team as the winner for the second time for its work on the Kosovo motorway project.”
Bechtel and ENKA started work on the Kosovo motorway project in 2010 with project completion taking place one year of ahead of schedule in November 2013. Route 7, a four-lane motorway, which includes 15 bridges, runs 48 miles (77.4 kilometers) from Morina on the Albanian border to the north of the capital, Pristina. Bechtel and ENKA’s work on an additional 37-mile (60 kilometer) motorway, linking Pristina to neighboring Macedonia, started in 2014 with the first section scheduled to open next month.
“We’re delighted to have won this prestigious award, which reflects our commitment to the environment and to the communities along the route of the Kosovo motorway,” said Chris Jennions, Bechtel-ENKA project manager for the project. “We focused on raising awareness about the environment by initiating events such as planning Kosovo’s first national short movie competition focused on the environment and by planting thousands of trees with students as part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability efforts, which were supported by local and national organizations and the media.”
In addition to being honored with two IRF Global Road Achievement awards, the Bechtel-ENKA team also won Engineering News-Record magazine’s “Global Best Projects Award” in 2013.
The Bechtel-ENKA joint-venture partnership has successfully delivered a number of major infrastructure projects in the region, including motorways in Albania, Croatia, and Turkey. They have completed more than 17,000 miles (more than 28,000 kilometers) of highways and roads, 100 tunnels totaling some 220 miles (about 350 kilometers) in length, and 25 major bridge projects.
