Bechtel has been selected by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) to submit a proposal to design and build Phase 2 of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project. Phase 2 will provide rail service between Washington, D.C., and Washington Dulles International Airport. The company is currently building the first phase of the new rail line and is one of five teams to make MWAA’s short list of Phase 2 bidders.
“Bechtel would be the best choice to design and build Phase 2 because of our successful work designing and building Phase 1, which is both on schedule and within budget,” said George Morschauser, president of Bechtel’s division in charge of civil infrastructure in North America.“We would welcome the opportunity to build the next phase and continue our partnership with MWAA.”
Bechtel is building the 11.7 miles (18.8 kilometers) of rail and five stations that make up Phase 1 of the new rail line, which is known as the Silver Line. Construction is nearly 90% complete and due to finish as scheduled next year. Phase 2 of the project will add 11.4 miles (18.3 kilometers) of rail and six stations, including the station at Dulles Airport.
The project has generated more than 1,800 local jobs, and Bechtel has hired hundreds of local companies, including nearly 200 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises, to provide services and materials for Phase 1. “Our approach to Phase 1 focuses heavily on working with local businesses and the community. They are our partners in successfully building Phase 1 and we will continue that approach in Phase 2,” Morschauser added.
