The California Valley Solar Ranch photovoltaic generating facility in San Luis Obispo County, California, began commercial operations October 31 with total electric generating capacity of 250 megawatts (alternating current).
SunPower hired Bechtel to build the facility, which is owned by NRG Energy and NRG Yield. The installation is one of the world's largest solar photovoltaic power plants and will sell its electricity to Pacific Gas & Electric under two long-term power purchase agreements.
“The successful execution of sustainable utility scale solar projects, especially one of this magnitude, is important for the solar industry,” said Donn Grimm, president of Bechtel’s communications, renewables, and transmission business line. “As more projects like California Valley Solar Ranch come online, the cost of solar will become more competitive with other sources of energy, demand for projects of this size and scope will increase, and the benefits of clean, renewable power will multiply.”
