Bechtel, a global engineering, procurement and construction leader, today announced that Barbara Rusinko, president of the company’s Nuclear, Security & Environmental business, has been honored with a 2016 Global Leadership Award by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). The Global Leadership Award honors professionals who serve as role models to women and have at least 15 years of international engineering, scientific or technology-based business or organization experience. Professional and collegiate women from various industries were recognized at WE16, the world’s largest conference for women engineers, held this year in Philadelphia.

“Global companies such as Bechtel need leaders like Barbara who inspire engineering and project management excellence across the industry,” said Brendan Bechtel, chief executive officer. “Over her more than 30 years at Bechtel, she’s been a positive example for young leaders, men and women, in diverse businesses such as power, oil and gas, and government services.”

Rusinko joined Bechtel in 1985, initially responsible for construction piping and field engineering support at three U.S. nuclear power plants. Later, she assumed leadership roles that included plant designer, engineering group supervisor, project engineer, and chief engineer of the company’s global government services business. Currently, she is responsible for projects and sites in a multibillion-dollar business serving the defense, environmental, national security, and nuclear industries, employing more than 35,000 technical and professional staff across the business unit’s wide-ranging portfolio.

Rusinko also serves on the corporate partnership council of the Society of Women Engineers where she’s an active mentor, and a member of several groups committed to improving diversity and inclusion in business and the engineering and construction industry.  In addition, she serves as the Leadership Council Executive Chair for DiscoverE, which works to sustain and grow a dynamic engineering profession through outreach, education, celebration, and volunteerism. Rusinko also helped pioneer Women@Bechtel, a collaborative forum connecting employees globally to promote the development and advancement of women at all levels.

“Inspiring the next generation of engineers from all walks of life is an important part of Bechtel business strategy,” said Jack Futcher, Bechtel’s president & chief operating officer. “Barbara’s career is a great example of diversity and inclusion at the senior most levels in the company, and this recognition affirms what can be accomplished with hard work and excellence.”
