The Atlantic Wind Connection has selected Bechtel to be the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the New Jersey Energy Link, the first offshore electricity transmission system to be built in the United States. Alstom will be the key equipment supplier for the landmark project, which will link energy resources and users in northern, central, and southern New Jersey.
“Bechtel and Alstom are global leaders in the design and execution of complex power projects and both have successfully completed projects across the globe,” said Robert Mitchell, president and CEO of the Atlantic Wind Connection. “These industry leaders are well qualified to design, build, and provide equipment for the New Jersey Energy Link.”
Bechtel will engineer and install onshore transmission lines and substations, two onshore converter stations, and one offshore converter stations. The company will also oversee the offshore installation of a first-of-a-kind high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter technology and HVDC cables that will span the length of New Jersey and carry 3,000 megawatts of electricity. The project will improve the reliability of New Jersey’s existing power grid and lays the infrastructure for offshore wind to be delivered onshore.
“We are building a landmark high-capacity transmission superhighway that will deliver energy to New Jersey in a way that has never been done before,” said Toby Seay, president of Bechtel’s transmission business line. “As Bechtel does on every project, we will partner with local businesses and hire local workers to successfully deliver this monumental project.”
Construction will begin in 2016 with service scheduled for 2019. Led by transmission developer Trans-Elect with equity support from Bregal Energy, Google, Marubeni, and Elia, the New Jersey Energy Link is the first phase of the multi-year Atlantic Wind Connection offshore wind transmission project. This cutting-edge, high-voltage, direct-current subsea backbone transmission system will ultimately span the mid-Atlantic coast.Read Atlantic Wind Connection's announcement.
