I supervise a small team of field buyers to ensure that goods and services are procured and delivered in a timely manner at the Scotfield oil upgrader expansion project in Alberta, Canada. Before this project, I worked in our London office on A big refinery expansion project in India and a gas development project in the United Arab Emirates, and in the Houston office supporting an ultra-low sulphur diesel refinery.
One of the biggest challenges in my job is understanding and dealing with logistical issues, which can be complex. For example, we arranged for the successful transport of a tail gas incinerator stack at the junction of two major highways in Alberta. The stack weighed 260 metric tons and was so big that electrical wires, traffic lights, and railroad signal lights had to be moved. The transport required police escort at the project’s expense.
I enjoy using all the resources available to learn the necessary skills to become a knowledgeable procurement specialist. My advice to any new Bechtel employee is to concentrate on the basics, and the rest will follow with experience. And take advantage of Bechtel's experienced staff by getting a good mentor.
