Wireless, broadband, and satellite communications are changing the way people live and work, and Bechtel is playing a key role by helping customers provide the newest and fastest voice and data services.
In 2007, we supported complex network deployments and new technology rollouts on a number of important projects. In the United States, we continued to provide program management, engineering, and construction services to AT&T Wireless (formerly Cingular Wireless) for the nationwide upgrade of its highspeed voice and data service. AT&T Wireless is the largest U.S. wireless carrier.
In a project featuring cutting-edge technology, we are helping TerreStar, an emerging network operator that plans to operate North America’s first 4G integrated satellite-terrestrial communications network. We are managing construction of 700 terrestrial sites for the company in three U.S. markets.
We also continue to help FiberTower, which provides “backhaul” networks that connect cell sites to land-based switching facilities. In September, the company asked us to design and construct 350 microwave sites for a 4G network buildout in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area.
In Bulgaria, we are managing site deployment for a nationwide wireless network, with some 600 sites completed and 600 more scheduled for this year. In Greece, we are supporting a nationwide rollout of high-speed DSL with program management services. In the UK, we are providing consulting services for the nation’s switch from analog to digital television.
